You must have the right to work in Australia

Why RenewMap?

Australia and New Zealand’s energy system is evolving fast. New generation, storage, transmission and demand are moving in parallel, and the project pipeline shifts every week.

For developers, suppliers, government bodies and market participants, the hard part isn’t a lack of information. It’s that the information is fragmented, inconsistent, hard to access and quickly out of date. That makes planning, origination, due diligence and stakeholder engagement slower and riskier.

RenewMap exists to fix this.

We turn messy, fast-moving energy data into a single, current, decision-grade view of what’s being built, where, and by who. We’re trusted for origination by leading developers, relied on in government reporting (such as the 2025 Annual Progress Report by the Climate Change Authority), and increasingly used to support commercial transactions across the energy supply chain.

RenewMap is only a few years in and we’re just getting started. Next, we’re expanding from project visibility into system-level behaviour (e.g. constraints, congestion) and deeper commercial workflows that help customers find, evaluate, and execute commercial opportunities with confidence.

RenewMap is built by energy professionals that deeply understand the industry with software engineers who care about craft. We are a small, mission-oriented team working with modern tools, listening to feedback and shipping quickly, and solving big problems that matter for our future.

The Role & Team

RenewMap itself is a web-based geospatial platform delivering accurate, highly accessible, and near real-time data to our customers. As a Data Systems Engineer at RenewMap, you’ll build and maintain data infrastructure that powers the product.

You’ll design and operate automated data pipelines that ingest, normalise and reconcile information from diverse sources and own data quality end-to-end. That means validation, provenance, change detection, monitoring, and human-in-the-loop tooling that helps our customers trust what we ship.

You’ll work closely with product engineers to turn messy real-world inputs into decision-grade datasets and customer-facing features. It is a hands-on role with meaningful ownership: you’ll make pragmatic technical choices and ship, learn and iterate quickly.

At RenewMap we move fast, talk to our customers, and collaborate without heavy processes. The work involves ambiguity, but it also creates direct value for the people responsible for our energy transition. And you’ll be backed by a world-class team to do your best work.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will be to:

  • Build and maintain production-grade data pipelines and infrastructure
  • Develop tools that collect and process high volumes of energy information
  • Design database schemas, indexing and access patterns to support the RenewMap product
  • Partner with product engineering to clarify requirements and deliver customer-facing outcomes
  • Implement data quality checks and monitoring to ensure accuracy, monitoring and reliability
  • Document data pipelines, schemas, and processes to ensure the system can be maintained

An average day might look like:

  • Morning: work on a new data collection pipeline which consolidates operational transmission data into a production dataset powering a customer-facing view
  • Before lunch: help a teammate answer a customer question about how some data is sourced, updated, and what its limitations are
  • After lunch: work with product engineers to on a system design exercise for a new feature
  • Afternoon: catch up with the team for weekly demos, present a new pipeline you’ve been building
  • Closing off the day: work on an external blog covering recent trends in project approval timelines

What we’re looking for

  • 3+ years experience with Python working on production data systems
  • Experience building automated data collection/ingestion pipelines, including browser automation (e.g., Playwright/Puppeteer)
  • Experience with SQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and designing/implementing ETL pipelines
  • Ability to convert messy, unstructured data into reliable datasets
  • Problem-solving mindset with strong attention to detail and data quality
  • Clear verbal and written communication. You’re happy to talk to customers and explain trade-offs

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of the Australian energy industry, especially AEMO datasets and processes
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Prefect preferred)
  • Experience with geospatial data formats, and GIS tooling (e.g. QGIS, GeoJSON)
  • Experience building automation with LLMs in a measurable, reliable way
  • Experience working in a high-growth SaaS environment

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Hybrid work with flexible hours
  • Learning and development budget
  • Access to energy industry events and networks
